What is gross payment status and how does a subcontractor get it?
A subcontractor I work with says they have 'gross status' so I shouldn't deduct anything from their pay — is that right?

Gross payment status means HMRC has approved a subcontractor to be paid in full, with no CIS deduction, on the basis they'll deal with their own tax and NI directly through Self Assessment or Corporation Tax. To qualify, the business generally needs to pass tests around turnover, and a good compliance history with HMRC filings and payments. You should still verify their status with HMRC before paying them gross, since gross status can be withdrawn if their compliance record slips.
