Can I claim for clothing I wear for work?

I buy smart clothes specifically to wear when meeting clients - can I put this through the business?

Generally no, everyday clothing isn't an allowable expense even if you only wear it for work, because HMRC views it as having a dual personal use (you could wear it outside work too). What you can claim for is genuine uniforms with a business logo, protective clothing needed for your trade (like safety boots or hi-vis), or costumes for performers, since these fail the 'could you wear it elsewhere' test. If you're unsure whether a specific item qualifies, it's worth checking with an accountant before claiming it, as this is an area HMRC scrutinises closely.
