Q&A > Limited Company

Do I need an accountant for my limited company?

I'm trying to keep costs down in my first year and wonder if I can manage the company's books and filings myself.

It's not a legal requirement, you can prepare and file your own accounts and tax returns, but most director-shareholders find an accountant pays for themselves through time saved and tax planning, such as the optimal salary/dividend split or claiming reliefs you might otherwise miss. Company accounting rules (statutory accounts formats, Corporation Tax computations, payroll) are more complex than sole trader bookkeeping, so mistakes can be costly. Many small businesses start with cloud accounting software plus periodic accountant support, then move to fuller support as the business grows.
