Q&A > Limited Company

What are my statutory filing obligations as a company director?

I've just been appointed director of a small limited company and want to understand what I'm legally required to file each year.

Each year you must file annual accounts with Companies House (usually within 9 months of your company's year end), a Company Tax Return (CT600) with HMRC, and a confirmation statement confirming your company's details are up to date. You're also responsible for keeping accounting records, paying Corporation Tax on time, and running payroll correctly if you or staff take a salary. Missing deadlines can lead to automatic penalties and, in serious cases, the company being struck off, so many directors use an accountant to track and manage these deadlines.
