What's a UTR number and how do I get one?
Someone mentioned I need a UTR to do my tax return but I've no idea what it is.

A UTR (Unique Taxpayer Reference) is a 10-digit number HMRC assigns to you personally once you register for Self-Assessment, and you'll need it every time you file a return or contact HMRC about your tax affairs. You get one automatically by registering online at gov.uk as self-employed or as needing to file a return, and it typically arrives by post within about 10 working days (longer if you're abroad). Keep it safe alongside your Government Gateway login details, as you'll use both every year.
