HMRC generally aims to process online VAT registration applications within about 30 working days, though it can take longer if HMRC needs extra information or if there are identity checks to complete. You'll get a VAT registration certificate showing your VAT number and effective date of registration once it's approved. In the meantime, you can't show a VAT number on invoices, but you may be able to increase prices to account for VAT you'll need to account for once registered — ask your accountant how best to handle invoicing during the wait.
